Indicative foreign exchange rates

The indicative foreign exchange rates in the table below apply to individual transactions up to NZD$99,999. 

Individual transactions of NZD$100,000 or greater will automatically have preferential pricing applied.

Foreign exchange conversions

If you want to transfer funds from a BNZ NZ Dollar (NZ$) account to credit your BNZ Foreign Currency Account, refer to the ‘You send Intl payment’ column.

If you want to transfer funds from your Foreign Currency Account to credit a BNZ NZ Dollar (NZ$) account, refer to the ‘You receive Intl payment’ column.

FX volume thresholds

We include a margin on foreign exchange conversions. The FX margin you receive will automatically improve based on the amount you want to convert in any single transaction. It is calculated on the following NZ Dollar thresholds:

$0 - $99,999 $100,000 - $249,999 $250,000 - $499,999 $500,000 - $999,999 $1,000,000 - $4,999,999 $5,000,000+

Buy foreign currency

You can buy foreign currency through our partner Travelex. BNZ customers can access special rates by using promo code  TRAVELEXBNZ 1 at checkout.

You can buy:

online at travelex.co.nz to click and collect from your selected Travelex location in New Zealand in person at a Travelex location with proof that you bank with BNZ (such as a statement or your BNZ banking card with your name on it).

You can also use your Eftpos or Flexi Debit Visa card while overseas to make cash withdrawals in a foreign currency.2

You cannot buy foreign cash from us or sell it to us, either in branch or online. 

Foreign cheques

We do not accept foreign cheques. If you receive cheques from overseas, you can ask for telegraphic transfers (also known as wire transfers), which are international payments directly into your account. This is a faster, safer, and more secure way to receive money from overseas.

All rates listed are foreign units to one NZ Dollar (NZ$1).
