The author of the reading believes that the photographic negatives were created by Ansel Adams. The speaker in the listening, however, casts doubt on this claim, mentioning that the arguments in the reading are not convincing .
First of all, the author points out that the similarity between the images of landscape features appearing on the negatives and the ones presented in Adams' previous works could serve as the evidence for Adams' ownership. This point is challenged by the speaker .He explains that instead of being a randomly photographed subject, the pine tree is in fact a famous landmark in Yosemite National Park which was visited by hundreds of thousands of people in the 1920s. Due to the tree's popularity in the park, a lot of photographers are known to have taken photographs of it .Thus, this rules out the possibility that the negatives belong to Ansel Adams.
The author goes on to argue for Ansel Adams' ownership by stating that the handwriting of numbers and place names on the envelopes resembles that of Virginia Adams', Ansel Adam's wife. The lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that the spelling of some Yosemite landmarks' names on the envelopes was incorrect. As Virginia Adams grew up in Yosemite and her father owned an art studio there, she would be highly unlikely to misspell the name, which indicates the impossibility for her to be the writer of the written place names on the envelopes.
Finally, the author states that the fire damage on some of the negatives is consistent with the fact that Ansel Adams' studio was in fire, resulting a number of negatives being destroyed or damaged. The lecturer, on the other hand, argues that the process that photographers used to create negatives in the 1920s was dangerous. It involved using highly flammable chemicals, which could cause a fire to start very easily. Thus, a fire in a photographer studio was a common occurrence in those days. In fact, a great number of professional photographers had worked that was damaged by fire. This again rejects the idea that Ansel Adams created those negatives.
