Drama is at the very heart of human expression, its communication and identity.

The School of Drama believes that its unique position in South East Asia offers an insight into this artform that will both inform and develop significant creativity and distinctive artists to engage with and feed the cultural community of Hong Kong, the Mainland and beyond. The School of Drama strives to be an incubator, catalyst and repository of the values and importance of the dramatic, and performative arts and expresses this in the nurturing of actors, directors, playwrights and teachers who will function as practitioner-artists making a tangible difference to their community and their chosen discipline.

The MFA in Drama offers an opportunity for independent advanced-level study based on professional practice underpinned by the methodology of practice-as-research. Learning in depth in the major disciplines of Directing, Playwriting, Drama and Theatre Education, Dramaturgy is complemented by taught courses to broaden knowledge in contemporary theatre, drama education, applied theatre, writing for performance, dramaturgy, the performing arts, and their cultural contexts. MFA in Drama majors are encouraged to work with each other across the disciplines as well as to explore interdisciplinary collaboration across the Academy's other master's programmes.

The four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in Drama programme is structured to produce professional practitioners with a vision and concern for the importance, relevance and development of the arts in society. To a rigorous regimen of practical craft-skills work are added conceptual knowledge of the development of theatre practice, both historical and contemporary, Western and Asian. This is complemented with courses that offer a wider appreciation of the performing arts, liberal arts, humanities and languages.

The one-year Diploma programme provide a firm foundation in the underpinning skills and knowledge that qualifying students need for the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) of HKAPA. Students learn about life at HKAPA (and experience it) and put themselves in a really strong position to prepare for the academic degree programmes with a focus on the professional training in performing arts.
